Vaping: Is it REALLY the healthier alternative to cigarettes?

New research shows that vaping significantly increases the risk of lung diseases, including bronchitis, COPD, emphysema, and asthma.

The study's senior author, Stanton Glantz, explains: 

What we found is that for e-cigarette users, the odds of developing lung disease increased by about a third, even after controlling for their tobacco use and their clinical and demographic information.

Glantz is also the director of the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco.

With the help of his research team, Glantz tracked 32,000 adults in the U.S. and their e-cigarette use.  

At the start of the study, none of the adults had any form of lung disease

Just three years later, they found something interesting...

The study showed that numerous vapers had developed a chronic lung disease after that three-year threshold.

In a news release, Glantz adds:

We concluded that e-cigarettes are harmful on their own, and the effects are independent of smoking conventional tobacco.

Vaping alone increases your risk of developing a chronic lung disease by 30%.

But the question is this:

Is vaping a healthier alternative to cigarettes? 

While inhaling vape juice may be less toxic than inhaling smoke, it’s not without its risks. 

In fact, the study found that it may make matters far worse…

The problem is that most smokers don’t stop smoking when they start vaping — they do both

"Dual users — the most common use pattern among people who use e-cigarettes — get the combined risk of e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes, so they're actually worse off than tobacco smokers," Glantz explains. 

That's right… Smoking and vaping together triple your risk of lung disease!

This sheds a whole new light on the debate of whether or not vaping reduces harm to the body.

Less than 1% of smokers in this study switched entirely over to vaping

"For most smokers, they simply add e-cigarettes and become dual users, significantly increasing their risk of developing lung disease above just smoking," said Glantz. 

That means that less than 1% of people have any health benefit from vaping, and 99% are putting themselves at more risk for chronic disease…

And though many have the intention to use vaping to wean themselves off of tobacco, this isn't typically the case. 

Instead, smokers end up adding more nicotine with vaping, which has the potential to strengthen the addiction. 

"This study contributes to the growing case that e-cigarettes have long-term adverse effects on health and are making the tobacco epidemic worse," Glantz adds.

Many medical professionals agree with Glantz’s findings. 

Dr. Len Horovitz, a pulmonary specialist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, said that “while vaping e-cigarettes was thought to be safe [apart from nicotine addiction], this study makes it clear that vaping nicotine is associated with pulmonary diseases such as asthma and COPD." 

Though the study focused on lung disease, there could be other health implications, too. 

Nicotine is known to contribute to insomnia, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease.

Not to mention any of the other chemicals and additives in vape juice…

It’s safe to say that vaping just isn’t worth the potential health risks.
