Study Debunks Long-Held Myth About Weight Loss + Aging
Alex Reid here with your Monday roundup.
“My eyesight is terrible. My joints are sore. I can’t remember a thing… I just can’t shed these pounds.”
We give “age” too much credit for what appears to be wrong.
As we approach the end of 2020, many will create those 2021 New Year's resolutions… And at the top of that list is weight loss.
It’s the same thing every single year… and how many folks tell themselves, “If I were younger, I could lose the weight I want”?
If you’re one of those people, it’s not your fault. The idea that folks in the 60+ age group can’t lose weight like their younger counterparts is a widely and long-held myth.
And, today, I’m happy to be the bearer of good news.
A recent study came across my desk that opposes everything you’ve probably been told about aging and weight loss.
Over a 10-year period, the Warwickshire Institute for the Study of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism (WISDEM) at UHCW studied 242 patients who attended the WISDEM-based obesity service between 2005 and 2016.
The researchers divided the group into two age groups: the under-60-years-old group and the 60-to-78-years-old group.
Lead author Dr. Thomas Barber of Warwick Medical School at the University of Warwick said:
"Weight loss is important at any age, but as we get older we're more likely to develop the weight-related comorbidities of obesity. Many of these are similar to the effects of aging, so you could argue that the relevance of weight loss becomes heightened as we get older, and this is something that we should embrace.
"Age should be no barrier to lifestyle management of obesity. Rather than putting up barriers to older people accessing weight loss programmes, we should be proactively facilitating that process. To do otherwise would risk further and unnecessary neglect of older people through societal ageist misconceptions."
According to the data, we can no longer hide behind age with our weight loss goals.
